One of Go Nagai's earlier works which was molded and shaped and remixed into Devilman and Mazinger Z. An English dub was done by Geneon in the 00s and after Geneon f'd out, Discotek got the rights and released the Uncut version as Geneon used the censored masters .
Story[]
Thousands of years ago, an evil space alien calling itself God attacked the people of Sodom by using His Psychic powers to kill and revive em over and over again as punishment for them not letting him use their bodies. The people's hatred for God allowed them to absorb the energy and evolve into Demons. Dante tried to fight God with a jet fighter, but it was caught by a Pteranodon, which was caught by a Dinosaur, which was then zapped by God's energy, which fused em together by Dante's hatred into Mao Dante. He fought against God but had his body sealed in the Himalayas, and his soul sent into the future to be reborn as a human. Years later, Ryo Utsugi was born and had dreams of demons. on a trip, he gets transported to the Himalayas and is willed t destroy the machines holding Dante's body in stasis. Dante's body eats him and regains its soul, then fights the Japanese military like a Kaiju. He also fights Zenon in a napalm fire who tries to make him give up on defeating God. However Ryo isn't aware of the past of Dante at this time. After a conversation about Ryo being Dante and his heart being Dante's heart he attacks Ryo with his 100 demons. He melts his demon warriors on Ryo to trap him in their goo but somehow Ryo wasn't in the demon goo (despite it forming his exact shape) and he rips Zenon in half from behind. As he was dying Zenon told Ryo about how he wanted God to be defeated and to raise a demon army to beat God as well as saying reference about Maoh Satan, Adam and Eve before dying offscreen. Later Ryo learns about his past from Medusa and decides to fight God to win back the Earth. He's last seen on a mountain summoning demons.

After seeing his manga, Toei wanted to do a thing of it but wanted a more human like main character. So he helped make Devilman with Akira Fudo in an Evil vs Evil story.
Also the whole "Human in the head of a big black demony thing fighting monsters" was used for Mazinger Z
Btw the whole mix of creationism/evolution and God being the bad guy with good gut Demon's has been reused by Go Nagai in many weird crazy sexy ways.
Other series seem to have taken influence from this and other Go Nagai series such as the Final Fantasy and Megami Tensei games where often God is a villain or boss in the game and the player sides with Daemons to beat him.
Violence Jack had a story arc which fused Harenchi Gakuen and Dante in a wasteland and had Hige Godzilla being called Dantetsu Yoshinaga who starts a secks cult after fusing with a daemon and goes around b0ning chicks, but is stopped by Jack and Yasohachi Yamagishi who fused with a daemon and kept his human heart.
Go Nagai later did Demon Lord Dante vs Getter Robo G which makes me think, wait, wasn't the 1st Getter Robo crossed over with Devilman in Devilman vs Getter Robo? How's that work? Also there was Cutie Honey vs Devilman Lady which was a Devilman Sequel and also had Honey Vs. where Honey Kisaragi meets Ryoma Nagare. Am I overthinking this? Is this really like how The Flintstones met both the Jetsons and the WWF? Or is there something deeper going on like with the Zelda Timeline? Find out, next time, on Dragon Ball GT!
Trivia[]
- So the original manga only told the 1st half of the story as the magazine f'd out but when Go Nagai got the anime made, he let them do their own thing with the ending.
- Go Nagai said in an interview that the whole "God being evil and daemons being good" was a thing on how in history, the winner is seen as the "good" guy but often is not. Kinda like how in the civil war, in Real life, lincon did a lot of evil in the civil war but cuz he won that one, he was seen as a "hero" even though if you look at the views of the time, he was kinda like Mussolini, but not in a good way.
